Location and our farm
Woolhanger
is one of Exmoor's most extensive moorland farms, lying between
the villages of Parracombe and Challacombe.
It is on the outskirts of Challacombe that Swincombe Mill can be
found. We are also fortunate to own 2.5 miles of double bank fishing
on the River Taw at Umberleigh, some 8 miles south of Barnstaple.
The Old Mill house is here - 200 yards from the river itself. From
Umberleigh to Exmoor, or vice versa, is about a 30 minute drive.
Exmoor National Park is one of 13 national parks in the United
Kingdom. the park covers 267 square miles and is one of the most
beautiful parts of Britain.
Exmoor lies within both North Devon and Somerset and is famed for
its wild moors, spectacular coast and deep valleys.
Woolhanger
grazes and manages some of the most sensitive and spectacular landscape
on Exmoor. The farm is run under an "environmentally sensitive
area" scheme, and we produce beef and lamb from extensively
reared, grass fed sheep and cattle. We have traditional hill breeds
- Scottish Blackface sheep, Galloway and Blue Grey cattle. These
are particularly good for managing the moorland grazing and much
of our farm is designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest
or county wildlife sites. Guests are welcome to enjoy the farm and
can walk directly from the front door up onto the moors. We have
a small herd of Exmoor ponies and frequently have groups of native
red deer on our ground. Also often seen are buzzard, kites, snipe
and woodcock.
The Taw Valley is renowned for its fertile soils and gentle scenery.
It is an area producing some of Devon's best livestock and golden
crops. Situated only 8 miles from Barnstaple and South Molton, it
is the ideal base from which to explore Exmoor, North and Mid Devon.
